Re: CULT: SPU: HELP!!!

Richard, I just want to add a bit to what Donald already wrote about spurias. I have planted them here in NW Iowa (zone 4, which is likely more like your zone 5, esp. if you're in the northern part of the zone) both in June, right after bloom, and in late Aug/early September. In both times I have had some stay dormant the rest of the summer, so that I thought I'd lost them, and some that show new growth fairly soon, like a TB. But, in any case, I don't think you need to worry if they don't grow now. In all likelihood you will see them come up next spring. I think you have to keep the new plants moist, though not wet, however, and not let them dry out. Normal rainfall will probably take care of it. ---One other thing. Spurias have to be planted deeper than TBs, the rhizome an inch or 2 below the surface.-----------My spurias are in full bloom now, a most welcome sight since I'm down to the last 2-3 TBs and 2 Siberians. They do spread out, and when a clump forms and blooms, 4 ft. and more tall, it's a glorious sight.
