Here in GUELPH, Ontario, Zone 4/5, the spuria are never dormant. I
plant them with 2-3" of soil over rhizomes. Also I plant in
September. The plants that I reveived in July from Arizona that were
planted in July had very poor survival rates. They started to grow
right away and by the time winter set in had too much growth and
died. The same plant from the same place, when held untill September
put up growth, but was it short and survived winter fine. The plants
never die back. The tall foliage dies with onset of winter, but there
is some new growth that remains green over winter and continues to
grow in spring. With this method of cultivation I have very good
results with the Spuria. Right now the foliage is about 2 feet tall
and no sign of buds. They should bloom about third week in July,
judging by current weather conditions (TB season just getting into
gear).
I list about 70 spuria for sale in my catalog. I ship them in
September, with othr beardless plants and they all seem to survive
well. Its rare that I get a request for replacement
