To go along with what Bruce Loberg has said about TMV - I can report another
anectodal bit. When I was living back in N.J. and for the first few years
here in Oregon (when I was a smoker) it was not unusual for me to see what
was proven to me to be TMV in the iris. Since I have quit the "filthy weed"
I have not seen any evidence of it in the last 7 years. It was explained to
me that the virus is quite easily transmitted to the plant by hands that
have come into contact with tobacco. For that reason I have made my garden
"smoke free" and request that those who do indulge please refrain from
touching the plants during their visit.
