Only about twice since 1963 have I missed getting the bearded
seedlings out of the pots and lined out by mid May. Last year I had
four that were lined out in the spring to give maiden bloom in
November and December, one and one half years from seeds.

The only beardless I line out in May are the JIs. You should see
the growth on some of them - ten to twelve inches. They were lined
out on May 11. The other beardless stay in the pots and in shade
until late October or early November. The heat will cook them here
if lined out in the spring even though they may be kept damp.

Because of a late freeze this spring, my two-year-from-seeds-
seedlings (bearded) got zapped and only about thirty percent
bloomed. In a normal year, I would expect fifty to seven-five
percent to bloom. When I lived in Texas, my percentage was
higher because of the longer growing season. One year there was
no freeze the second half of the year!

This year's bearded sprouts were lined out on May 14 and May
16. Most are growing rapidly and are six to eight inches tall now.
They need to be watered heavily. Extreme heat doesn't seem to
affect their growth as long as they are damp.
