You are correct. Being lazy, I also looked at tags used by State Game and
Fish Commissions to tag fish (prenumbered with a unique code), ear tags for
cattle (prenumbered), drawing tickets (prenumbered but not substantial),
colored tags so I didn't have to write on each one (not enough colors), multi
colored paper clips (to much writing to describe the color combination),
colored knitting and crochet thread (fades), colored coded thin insulated
wire (same as paper clips plus labor intensive and difficult to carry enough
colors). Even tried some of each of these at various times. Plus one year I
even tried a health dose of self discipline. I made only logical crosses.
Crossed the pod and pollen parents, back and forth to each other, over and
over. I used strips cut from plastic window blinds and only had to label each
clump one time.
That last technique still has some merit for some. But let me tell you, for
me it sure took the fun out of hybridizing and turned it from a passion into
a routine. That just ain't no fun!
