Betty this is my fourth year of hybridizing so I am not a expert. I have been gardening for years though.
When my seedlings get about 2" I transplant into 4" or 6" pots one seedling per pot.
I did not do that the first year and got no first year bloom. The second year I used a mixture of sand, compost and bagged cow manure in the pots. I keep them watered and once a week use Peter's plant food you mix with water. Late July I line them out.
I get better than 50% first year bloom. Last year on a SDB cross I had 15% 5 month bloom. One of the parents was a rebloomer. One SDB seedling had 32 increases. It is working for me so I am sticking with it. Like someone said on list " Babies need a lot to eat to grow"
I have a one seedling from Dusky Challenger X Tom Johnson, a 2000 cross, the only one that germinated. It had three increases and the mother tried to bloom this year( first year bloom) Or maybe it tried to "floomed as you called it" Stalk froze and was 6" tall but almost 3/4" in diameter. I has three fans, leaves are totally straight up, no drooping like some of my other iris. 36" tall 3" to 3 1/2" wide. Huge plant. I have never seen anything like it. And my friend John Bruce grow 2800 iris and he has never seen anything like it. Hope it blooms next year.

No matter how hard I try, I rarely get bloom from first year seedlings. Last
year I
was fortunate to have cool weather long enough to plant seedlings in mid-may.
Still, of the ones that survived, few floomed. Same with the year before.
Planted early, but only a few bloomed.
For a variety of reasons, I'll have to plant in the fall this year. It's too
hot now and will stay that way, I suspect. I hate having to add an entire
year onto the process. Reason for the potting I mentioned earlier.
To all that hyrbidize---Are you able to plant in the spring and what
percentage of bloom do you get the next year?
