Betty, of course, my climate is entirely different from yours, and I have only been pollen daubing for three years, but last year on a row I planted in March and covered with shade cloth during the summer heat, I got about 70 % bloom by late April this year. Right now I am trying to keep about 400 little seedlings alive in 110+ heat, and I am losing some. I am going to have to do something different with the seeds I am just starting to harvest now, because I have no place to put any more seedlings until my guest irises leave next summer. I am planning to soak them in the spring, refrigerate them over summer and plant in the fall. I really think that with a row cover, I can get seedlings through winter here better than I can through our fierce summers. Has anyone from a warm climate tried this?

No matter how hard I try, I rarely get bloom from first year seedlings. Last
year I
was fortunate to have cool weather long enough to plant seedlings in mid-may.
Still, of the ones that survived, few floomed. Same with the year before.
Planted early, but only a few bloomed.
For a variety of reasons, I'll have to plant in the fall this year. It's too
hot now and will stay that way, I suspect. I hate having to add an entire
year onto the process. Reason for the potting I mentioned earlier.
To all that hyrbidize---Are you able to plant in the spring and what
percentage of bloom do you get the next year?
