Re: HYB:Seedling:Planting:Blooming

Francelle,

I water with overhead watering every other day excepting rainy days. When
it gets really hot, windy and dry, I will water every day. Seedlings are
the only thing I do water anymore. Mine have thrived. Most of them look
like mature plants by fall, complete with increases on nearly all of them.
I've seen no sign of rot doing this. It would likely be fatal on mature
plants under my growing conditions. Last year nearly all the seedlings
bloomed after one year. That would likely have been true this year, but I
spent a lot of time snapping out freeze damaged stalks and central fans, so
it didn't happen. Still, probably 20% bloomed the first year. They grow in
elevated beds to which I add generous amounts of cottonseed compost and cow
manure. Pretty rich stuff compared to what they have to grow in after
moving in the fall. Losses haven't been high in the first year seedlings.
Mostly due to the occasional wimpy grower and most often to being completely
devoured by grasshoppers. Some plants have exhibited rot as mature plants,
but not as seedlings.
