Well, I got home today to find grasshoppers had discovered the uncovered bed
of seedlings. As a solution I got out a borrowed, or given if you wish,
pair of ladies hose. I must admit I'd never put on any ladies hose before,
but it was all I could think of to do. These were the last seedlings to
germinate and are still quite small. I have used ladies hose to tie plants,
or cover pods or knot in sections to soak seeds in the toilet tank, but
nothing else. It turned out to be quite a chore. I pulled; I tugged - the
material stretched, but had a mind of its own. I contorted, I squirmed and
I clamped it between my legs to hold it - still it rolled, it retracted and
simply wouldn't get where I wanted and stay there. What about the toe of
the thing? Or the top? I came to the conclusion that the size was just
too small. But I simply can't think of a tactful way to suggest a more
pleasant diet than carrot and celery sticks washed down with a can of
Slimfast might prove to be more useful. And does it even have a size
anyway? For nearly two hours I struggled with getting the remarkable stuff
stretched and smooth and in place. It doesn't rip easily, that's for sure.
I broke out in a sweat early on. I think it may be easier to wield the pick
axe and sharpshooter digging postholes than putting this stuff on. In the
end, I only had 4 of the smallest hanging wire baskets covered with the
stuff. I definitely need a bigger size or different method if I'm to get it
on the larger sizes. Still, there are four seedlings with what appears to
be a secure cover that will allow air, water and some light through and keep
the grasshoppers off. With the extraordinarily poor germination I had this
year, that's something at least
