Aw shoot Len. . .fish emulsion isn't THAT bad!
On a serious note. . .I use a proportioner attachment if I'm covering a
large area. Using this method, one gallon makes 16 gallons. I use 1 cup FE
per gallon of water and mix it up in a 5 gal. bucket, hang the proportioner
hose in and start watering. I only use the full strength (1 cup FE/1 gal.
water) in the spring. After that, I use 1/2 cup per gal. water or about 2
1/2 cups per 5 gallons water. I don't remember where I bought the
proportioner. . .the last one I believe I bought at a nursery and cost about
$9-10. It screws onto the faucet on one end and your hose on the other end.
In the center is a small hose that goes into your bucket holding the
FE/water mixture. The resulting mixture equals a 16 to one ratio. While
using the mixture, stop and stir it once or twice. The FE is heavy and tends
to sink to the bottom.
It just occurred to me that someone may NOT read the above thoroughly. THE 1
CUP/1 GALLON OF WATER IS ONLY USED WITH A PROPORTIONER, MAKING 16 GALLONS OF
MIXED SOLUTION.
Make life a bit simpler Len. . 5 tbls. equals 1/4 cup!
As far as the flies being attracted to the smell. . yes they are but
after 15-20 minutes they are gone. And nope, you aren't going to have
maggots. . flies only lay eggs in a food source, like dead meat, so that the
newly hatched larva have an adequate supply of food to grow on.
Regarding the problem of coons and possums digging around the plants
after using FE - I'm sure it can be a problem depending upon the wild life
population where you live. In AR the only problems I had in my gardens were
the ground hogs and armadillos. The ground hog was allowed to live
peacefully until he feasted on three 50ft. double rows of French fillet
green beans and ate them to the ground. . . we coexisted nicely until this
happened. The armadillos are another story. . .those suckers will absolutely
undermine your house if given half a chance - they are 4 legged excavating
machines! Again, we coexisted until they tore up a lot of ground in my
market cabbages looking for grubs. . . don't know how many grubs they found
(I saw very few) but one well placed 22 ended their search.
And Len. . .try not to slop, splash or spill the FE on your person!!
Makes you smell. . . .not nice to yourself or other (people). However, dogs
and cats will just love you!!
