Subject: [iris-talk] TB: Spring Parasol/Afternoon Delight
Has anyone out there ever grown Spring Parasol? I ordered it from a large
and well-known source this year (based on the photo); apparently they have
decided not to sell it after all because it just didn't grow very well for
them. I was wondering if anyone else has experience with it.
John, I've been growing Spring Parasol for the past six years. I try to keep at least three clumps going as two of them are sure to bloom out. True to form, I've got one clump left as two bloomed out for me this spring. Three years ago I did some crosses with it. I didn't get anything outstanding, but at least the seedlings don't seem to have that tendency.
I have never grown Afternoon Delight, but I have three of its seedlings, Competitive Edge, Smiling Gold and Knock'em Dead. Competitive Edge isn't easy to grow either, but it's certainly a gorgeous blend of brown, lavender and gold. Since your place in CA can't be as hot as Phoenix, SP might do better for you. It is a beautiful pink.
