Arnold, that is very true.  If you have an iris you are going to introduce and
need all the stock you can get ASAP, plant the old mothers because sometimes
they send up sprouts.

'Your circumstances' can include climate.  Where I live, a clump that is four
or five years old is so massive you'd need a jackhammer to get it out of the
ground.  I have a two year clump of GYPSY ROMANCE that must have thirty or
forty rhizomes in it.  Can you imagine it being left alone for five years? 
Whew!

Another 'your circumstance' thing has to do with a pitchfork.  Can you really
dig an iris with one?  I have never tried it.
