Re: HYB: immature pods

I saved a pod from Lotus Land last year that the stalk had started rotting out
from under the pod. I left what appeared to be healthy remnants of the stalk
attached to the pod and brought it inside, put it near a window with good
light and air movement. Later I discovered the pod had gone soft and smelled
bad. Immediately I got a dish, opened the stinky pod and shelled out the
seeds--which had the smell too. I flushed them several times then dried
them.

Would you believe--a few of those seeds germinated, although weakly, this
spring. The endosperm was only partially developed, so there was little food
for the new embryo, but they survived. I never cease to be amazed at the
toughness and durability of iris.
