I read the same article, Christian! 
 
If anyone get's the American Iris Society Bulletin, the April 2003 bulletin contains a past-published article from E. Einert and C.O. Box.  They conducted a study on Iris Mulches and the effects they had on iris.  The article originally appreared in the January 1969 Bulletin (#192).  
 
Is this the article that you were referring to?

very recently read something in the archives (I think that was where) that
was the result of a study some kind. I believe that the conclusion they
drew was that most mulches (except plastic) actually increace the occurance
of leaf spot. I don't remember if they offered any theory as to why...
