Chris:
Funny you should mention Cassidy & Linnegar's "Growing Irises" -- I've
had it checked out of our public library so long (3 weeks) I had to
re-new it just yesterday! I assume photo of I. variegata you mentioned
refers to "Irises in a small garden" that shows several different
blooming plants. And yes, my "heirloom" one is same/similar to that
glimpsed in center of photo behind concrete planter: butter-yellow
standards, cinnamon-brown, veined falls, flower head considerably
smaller than modern TB hybrids.
Since I already have I. pallida (inc. both solid & variegated leaved
ones), this means I have "the two important species from which the whole
range of TBs sprang" according to Cassidy & Linnegar. Cool!
I like that slim little volume, "Growing Irises" -- it's already taught
me a lot, as have you folks via Iris-L. Thanks.

Several STB's flowering (all z.4 re-bloomers, I hope); many buds showing
on TB's and my lilac bushes -- this is major, because it took 12 yrs for
those to start blooming & this is year 3 since then!
