Rima--I think I'm up-to-date on my reading for once, and I don't recall
anyone answering your question.  In my experience, this is usually caused
by frost damage.  Usually a late frost as the bloom stalk is getting ready
to emerge.  Some varieties show damage and others don't.  I had quite a
bit of this this year.  Even in the same clump, some stalks did this and
some didn't.  I guess this depends on their frost tolerance and what stage
of development the bud was in when hit by frost.
