Rusty.... (and Gunnar - I'm including the entire question since some of these
messages arrive in psychotic sequence... and this way folks will know what
I'm responding to).

ABSOLUTELY... any of those irises can (and... I may add... probably HAVE) win
a blue ribbon. There's a world of difference between the show bench and the
garden. Irises on the show bench are judged against their perfection for
that cultivar... where irises in the garden are judged for their worthiness
as a garden plant.

IOW.... If you brought Kaleidoscope to a show (1929 iris)... it could not
only win a blue... but MAY win Queen of the Show. A judge is looking for
perfection in that iris as Kaleidoscope - they do not look at it as it
compares to any other iris. SO... the judges are looking to see if it's
typical for Kaleidoscope... if the branching is correct... if it was grown
well... if there is no imperfections such as dirt, tears, insect infestation,
wilted blooms, etc.

NOW... when the judges are in the garden, they are considering whether an
iris has a good bud count, good branching, good ratio of stalks to fans,
clean and healthy foliage, and overall garden appearance. Their objective is
to recommend, by voting the ballot, this iris as being a worthy addition to
irisdom.

KATHYGUEST knows what she means to say.... I just hope I got it across!
