bad (?) bud count

This question has been bugging me for at least a week, but I FINALLLY
remembered to ask it.  A while back someone said, that when judging an
iris, anything less than 7 buds is a "fault"  yet, some of the most DDG
(drop dead gawjus) irises have only 5 or 6 ie, ACOMA, ELEGANT
IMPRESSIONS (6-7 buds), FANCY TALES (6 buds), and the list goes on...

So, at a show, can these irises win a blue ribbon?  Even with the
"fault" of having less than 7 buds?   An inquiring mind wants to know.
