As I said in my self introduction I live in the
snow belt, the eastern suburbs of Cleveland
Ohio. According to "Wyman's Gardening
Encyclopedia" I live in Hardiness Zone 5. I
think that it is a true zone 5 even with the
snow. The wide variety of healthy Azaleas and
Rhododendron in the neighborhood prove it.
Most of my tall beared iris have been in the
ground for at least 4 years. I understand that
it is not unusual for iris to occasionally
"rest" and not bloom for a season or two. My
collection seems to have developed a pattern.
About half of the color varities bloom in even
numbered years and others in odd numbered years
and only one color (light blue) blooms every year
and that one blooms profusely in even numbered
years and only one or two blooms in odd years.
What am I doing or not doing that produced this
pattern?
The alternate bloom pattern is fun. Even after I
have explained that each plant has only one color
pattern one neighbor (adult) thinks that the
plants change the color of their bloom each year!
:-) However, it would be a better display if
about half of each color pattern would bloom each
year.
Will digging and dividing break up the alternate
year bloom and give me some of each color each
year or do I have to do something else. If so
what?
TIA
Bob
