Iris talkers,
I thought I would update ya'll on the Discount scene. The rose bushes I
bought at Walmart under the label of Better Homes & Gardens? Well, they came
from a place called Stars in Texas. I bought four and the only one that may
be true to its name is a white called John F. Kennedy. I say may because it
is white and slow. I've been told this does match JFK.
One tea rose, supposed to be Peace turned out to be a red florabunda and
quickly filled up it's allotted space. A truly beautiful rose, but not what
I expected. Tropicana, which I have grown before and love, turned out to be
slow and red. Joseph's Coat, a red/yellow climber, died promptly on
planting.
Now, I can agree with the idea that we, the public, get what we ask
for--after all, you might say that I hoped to get by with buying beautiful
but "cheap" roses and I deserved to get took! (??) Perhaps that is true. We
get what we pay for?
On the other hand, I held out for a specific rose I wanted for my garden, RIO
SAMBA. The most fantastic, color changing rose I've ever seen! I fell in
love with this red/yellow/orange/ beauty while touring Goldsmith Botanical
Gardens in Memphis. (At an iris meeting!) I couldn't find this rose locally
so I ordered it from Jackson & Perkins and paid a (ouch) premium for it. It
arrived loose in a box, a mere stick, but with instructions to plant and
water heavily. Boy did it take off! Now I have several buds, a few days
from opening. And that rose, from which hangs a medallion with it's name
embossed, has lovely yellow-gold buds! The RS I've seen bloom before come
from red buds! If it's a yellow rose I will keep it because I want a yellow,
BUT. . .
