I know it is cumbersome, awkward, and gets heavy along the way,
but your best bet is to have a bag or satchel with all the Checklists
and R & I's from 1990 through 1998. Bring your sectional
checklists such as the new Signa Checklist. Most of your answers
about identity are there. Refer to them as needed. Have open
interchange with the other judges and call in the show chairman or
even the exhibitor of a questionable stalk when the Checklists or R
& I's don't resolve the problem.
There should be interaction between the seasoned judges and the
apprentices. At a recent show in Memphis, we took turns with the
apprentices in starting the critique of individual stalks. Rarely were
they overruled. The two apprentices stated that they had just
observed at other shows when they were on a panel. They were
not permitted to vote on the best speciman, however.
The personalities on a panel may also determine whether one is
comfortable or not. I know there are some who hate to be
assigned to a panel with me for obvious reasons!
I had wanted to comment on Maureen's post when it first appeared
but because of a problem with my fingers, I was unable to do so.
Thanks, Gerry, for bringing the question back to our attention.
