Maureen,
I am a fairly new judge. I've judged shows the last four years, a total
of seven shows. I have also clerked at or been tutored at a similar
number. During the tutorings I was asked for comments on two or three
stalks each during the judging; otherwise I listened. Of course, after
the judging my tutor walked me around the show again and we had LOTS of
give and take.
By now I feel pretty comfortable. But in my case, comfort definitely
comes from accepting ignorance rather then from having detailed
knowledge of most of the cultivars and species.
