Re: Oriental Beauty (and judging shows)

From: "Mark, Maureen" <MARKM@tc.gc.ca>

Hi Bill,

I'll have to check the show schedule. Best species may just be the short
form for best species and other classes (where bulbous iris belong). I
remember thinking that it was not a species but assumed the judges knew what
they were doing. Besides, the judging was taking forever for a small show.
Moreover, as an apprentice, I was not allowed to say anything -- I was
already told off by Sandy for repeating a comment that there was a hole in a
fall.

There was also a species I. arendia? of which none of the judges were
familiar. I also had to bite my tongue when MYSTERIOUS MONIQUE was being
judged as the specimen was smaller than normal. In this instance, the judge
who had to step back had to step forward to tell the other judges that the
bloom was smaller than normal.

All I can say is that show judging is tough. There will invariably be
something on the bench that you will have difficulty judging because you
have never seen it before. For example, the setosa seedling that won best
non-TB seedling. It was a great colour, had small round form and nice bud
count. But was it distinctive? I couldn't say for sure. I could say that
the colouring was not prevalent, but are there others like it -- I didn't
know. I haven't seen enough setosas.

How many judges are truly comfortable judging shows? How many years does it
take to get comfortable?
