CULT: borer season?
From: Dennis Kramb <dkramb@badbear.com>
Is it borer season yet? I found an iris with a bunch of "goo" piled on top
of the rhizome at the base of the fan. I pushed it aside and found a hole
in the base of the fan.
After digging it up I saw that the hole was a tunnel clear through to the
other end of the rhizome, but there was no worm in it.
I hosed it off, soaked it in chlorox, and I'm letting it bake in the sun.
I didn't scrape anything away because the "walls" of the tunnel were not
mushy.
This is an iris I've had in the ground since Summer 1997 and it hasn't
increased or bloomed yet. So it won't be any big loss if it croaks.
None of my other irises seem to have any "goo" or holes in them. I've
never had a problem with borers yet, so I'm not sure what signs to look for.
