Hello out there,
I had some disease on bearded iris last year which the local Ag consultant
had sent to Sacramento for diagnosis. The answer from the "big guys" was
Scorch. They took educated guesses about a cure. Mostly, I just pitched a
lot of plants. I do know that in my case, chlorinated water had nothing to
do with the problem or the solution. We are on a well which does not have a
chlorine drip system. One of the suggestions from the Ag dept. was for
heavy doses of Terraclor. I did apply it once, however, the plants were too
far gone by the time I found a supplier. There was also a suggestion that I
was applying too much water and that iris MUST not be watered from overhead
(of course, I knew that already).
The previous year, everything was clean, except for brown spots. Brown
spot is basically impossible to eliminate due to our climate. We have lots
(average of 275 days per year) of noticeable fog combined with warm
temperatures. If there was ever a more conducive climate for brown spot, I
certainly wouldn't want to live there. And for that reason, I am adding
more and more beardless iris to my catalog. They are rapidly proving
themselves invaluable; so reliable and problem-free.
As an afterthought, I must add that I have discovered that Miracle-Gro,
while great for other perennials, caused rot in my garden, too.
I'll be glad to add my zone as soon as I can retrieve my Sunset Garden book
from its current prison in storage in a part of the house undergoing major
reconstruction.
