Re: CULT: iris patch observations

From: wmoores@watervalley.net

Things in the local patch and in the surrounding environs look too
good for this time of the year. With two weeks of warm, sunshiny
weather, growth on everything here is rampant, and all of this
makes me scared. Every year since I have lived at the current
location, there has been a freeze in March, and this is the cause of
the worry.

The wild pear trees and the Bradfords are in full bloom all around,
looking like giant snowballs against the stark gray background of
the hardwoods. The daffodils, King Alfred and Ice Follies, have
bloomed themselves into the daff hall of fame and are past peak.
Very few of the other kinds ever do much here, but I always try.
Looks like most of the doubles will just make foliage and die out
over the summer as is their customary procedure...just not cold
enough. The old timey narcissus have outdone themselves, too,
and are wonderful harbingers of spring along with their forsythia
companions.

Swelling is apparent in the fans of the arilbreds, and with seventy
degree days continuing and no dreaded freeze, they should be
blooming in a fortnight. I will bloom about one hundred fifty arilbred
children if I am so lucky.

IDA RED and GOLD FOREVER have budded in the tall department.

If we are this early, I wonder how Dallas is faring. Suppose it might
be a beardless convention??
