Personally if the pollen looks nice and fluffy I leave it alone.  If it
looks old and dry I carefully put it in my mouth and breathe on it.  I have
never been much of a spitter.  Breathing adds moisture to the dry pollen and
seems to  revitalize it.  Much better success rate after humidifying the
pollen.
