While doing spring cleanup in the gardens today, I found the first iris
casualty of the year. Unfortunately it was my only variegated iris! Iris
foetidissima "variegata".
About 2 months ago on a warm day I strolled about the flower beds and saw
that something had dug up this particular iris and it was laying on the
ground right next the big hole where it had once been planted. It seemed
to be in good health, so I replanted it and watered it in.
Lo and behold, today I found it was totally dead & mushy. Apparently a
victim of rot? Interesting footnote: a non-variegated foetidissima growing
about 3 ft. away is doing fine & putting on good increase.
