As Mother (Rosalie) has said, this is a bad idea. It will ruin the tree just
as it would ruin a chimney and anything else it climbs on. The weight of the
ivy will break tree limbs off, esp if it snows or ices up as the ivy has
leaves in the winter. I just lost a couple of limbs of a very beautiful old
crape myrtle that way.
You might be able to trellis it.
