Just to keep the record straight, horses are not ruminants. Ruminants are
herbivorous animals with a 4-chambered stomach that provides them with an
efficient means of fermenting and digesting high fiber feeds. They include
such species as cattle, sheep, goats, buffalo, elk, deer, and antelope.
Horses have a simple stomach like humans, dogs, and pigs. They do have a
fermentation chamber in their digestive system, the cecum (anatomically
equivalent to the human appendix), but it is much less efficient than the
rumen in cattle, etc. Therefore, horses do tend to digest their feed less
thoroughly, as you say.
