Are you sure you want ivy up your tree, or any other vine unless you are keep
it under control? I had a maple that was choked to death with wisteria and
it was a big tree ---- and my neighbor in the back has lost an apple from ivy
vines. For THAT I am eternally thankful because I had to pick up rotten
apples that fell into my iris garden (note the mention of irses!) which was
