Dana; pay heed. I should have mentioned that precaution when I spoke
earlier today. Irv says he removed the staples years ago, both for
the sake of the tree and to avoid strangling the vines as they grew.
We later called in tree removal men and had them remove all of the tree
above 15 feet, leaving a "stump" that tall and a foot and a half thick
to support the vine. I've seen 20-year-old wisterias literally lift
their trellises out of the ground, and I don't think that's going to
happen here! The tree, by the way, was one of those Chinese elms that
draws pesky bugs, so we didn't mourn its passing. (I should add that
this tree stands just north of the side-yard IRIS bed.) Our game plan
was that the vine would overgrow any regrowth on the stump, but they're
still battling it out.
