Hi, Dana--Irv and I made a wisteria tree by training vines up the
trunk with plain old steel fencing staples until they got high enough
to grab the branches themselves. (I had grown up in acres of wooded
cattle pasture where the fences were often nailed to trees, and it
never seemed to hurt the trees.) I'm talking about trees of considerable
size, however--oaks, elms, hickories, etc.--not some frail ornamental.
Good luck. An ivy tree sounds great.
