Hi Walter and Talkers,

I don't grow many historics anymore. I spent quite a
number of years reading old bulletins and searching
for many of the oddities of the iris world. Many are
lost forever I fear. Recently, there was some
discussion of Double Eagle and Thurlow Weed on the
list. I looked and looked for these and never found
them. Such a shame. 

At the moment, I have a collection of flat blooming
irises but nothing very rare. I would say all of the
ones I grow (with the exception of Clematis) are
easily found in the catalogs. I grow things like Full
House, Flat Rate, Gazoo, Little Freak, Rhythm, Topless
Dancer, White Parasol etc. Clematis was given to me
several years ago by Jerry Flintoff and as of this
writing has never bloomed for me. But Jerry told me
that it's ID was verified by Phil Edinger so I keep it
under that name. Hopefully one day I will see it
bloom.

I also grow another flat variety that we irisarians
here in Seattle call "Fran's Flattie". It's not a
properly registered, just a garden name that we use
when we trade this plant amongst members. The history
of this plant is that it came from Fran Hawk's mothers
garden. No one knows if it is a registered variety or
a mutation of something. It's basically a white iris
with purple veining. The standards flop open and
inside surfaces are also marked with purple veining
but irratically (sp?). It's very interesting.
