Well, as the ex-Rot Queen, I hate to be the bearer of sad tidings, but
that's what happens to bearded irises when they get a really hard freeze
once they've started growing well in late winter/early spring. The rain
just hastens things along. I fear you've lost this year's bloom on all
of the ones that were killed to the ground, but some may put on
increase. Keep an eye out for rot, and yes, it's probably a good idea
to clean out the dead parts (I don't, but then I am only interested in
keeping the toughest ones).
Hopefully you have some that can cope with this kind of nasty surprise.
I'm interested in hearing about the ones that don't show any damage, or
rather, the ones that go on to have normal blooms. All of them get at
least a little bit of injury from that kind of a temperature dip. I
assume it got into the lower 20's F or colder?
Seems like I remember that you have the pots buried in mulch or soil? -
that's a good idea, otherwise, the soil tends to warm even faster and
makes the problem worse.
Our usual rollercoaster weather has definitely not been around this year
- sorry to hear you have it. Of course, it isn't too late here yet -
the pears & peaches are just starting to bloom. Plenty of time to kill
the new fruit on them still. :<
Condolences....
