Around these parts they say sow peas on George Washington's birthday. I don't
sow peas so I cannot speak to the wisdom of this.

It is bright and fresh in Richmond, Virginia, today. We had a really lovely
rain last night, which was needed sorely. A plastic bucket sitting on the
deck had about an inch and a half of water in it this morning and overnight
the lilies of the valley poked through the surface of the soil. The leaves on
the magnolia are shiny and she is holding them toward the sun. The buds on
the tree peony are swelling, new growth is coming up on the Amsonia, Phlox
and Danae, and the Viola dissecta is blooming like mad. I'm really enjoying
my pansies, too. There are some casualties from the cold this year; I lost
one of my beloved mammoth lavenders, but, knock wood, we have apparently made
it through the dangerous Ides with no ice or snow.

As I recall we celebrated last St. Patrick's with a nice thread on green
irises. This will will be found in the Archives. This year in the spirit of
inclusiveness we have been discussing orange. I thank all who have
contributed to that discussion, and those whol offerred thoughts on the
subject of cream irises as well.
