Linda Mann asked about experience growing Romantic Evening in the
East and/or Southeast. It does just fine here in NC, zone 7a. I
have some seedlings from Romantic Evening pollen on Swingtown, a
violet self, and Great Gatsby, a bitone violet-blue. There should be
enough bloom this spring in these to give some notion of how Romantic
Evening will breed as far as basic color genetics. Everything I've
seen introduced from it has been in the bicolor class.
In regards to vigor, buds, branching, Joe Ghio and Keith Keppel both
praise it and recommend it, and use it themselves rather heavily.
They are into the second and third generation with its offspring, and
some rather startling things are coming out of its descendents.
STARRING is a black and white amoena. Even though its parentage got
lost, Joe is sure it is from Romantic Evening, and its form, finish
and character suggest he is right. Compare it to Keppel's WILD WINGS
and the new intros. They look like a family.
