I also agree! Been thinking along the same lines. Wild Wings is a
step forward toward black self. The bloom is tighter, but a bit
smaller I think. It also is quite vigorous.
The biggest difference here is LACK of aphylla ancestry in Romantic
Evening. The bloodline is almost pure Blyth breeding--with a little
of other Ghio bloodlines, not too different from what lies behind the
Blyth breeding. None of the ancient "root" breeders behind the blacks
show up in the pedigree as far as I can see.
I suspect the particular aphyllas behind modern blacks may be partly
responsible for the problems mentioned of bloom-out, vigor, etc.
Oddly, the Craigs don't mention the kind of problems referred to.
The aphyllas they've used are giving rise to all sorts of good
traits, including rebloom. Interesting.
Wild Wings and Romantic Evening with some of the larger, better
blacks--that will be fun to see. Keith Keppel says Midnight Oil is
not an easy nor a good parent. That's pretty authoritative
considering his scale of breeding, wouldn't you say. But what of
other Schreiner-line blacks?
