Thanks for the information on the origin of the species name.
I based my comment about climate-of-origin on the remark by Randolph
and Mitra in *Garden Irises*, p. 295, where *I. aphylla* is described
as "Widely distributen in the Balkans and eastward into the Middle
East," which would be on the border between "humid continental" if
not "marine west coast" to the north and west, and "mediterranean,"
with the range extending into fully developed "mediterranean." The
clones I had came from Dr. Randolph and were from Bosnia and other
Balkan sources.
