Re:Iris Missouriansis

The first time I saw I,missourienses was near Bozeman, Montana--about 200
miles east of where I live--fields and fields of them--a nice blue-darker
than mid-blue--that was about 25 years ago--and through the years I have
seen them from Bozeman to central Oregon--saw mountainsides of them last
year going from Boise to Portland--stopped the truck and got out and climbed
up and looked at them--thinking the flowers were not missourienses--because
of the pale color of them----and everywhere I have seen them--the height did
not seem to vary very much--the most variation was the color--from paler in
dryer areas to darker in wetter areas.
When I was growing up in Northern California, we had a native Iris--about 5"
tall--always seemed to grow at an angle-rather then the stem growing
straight up--the color range was white, cream, pale blue---usually a very
pale, insipid plant and flower--have never found out which specie it
was--but it grew under the pine trees--at about 2,000 to 5,000 feet--and in
some undisturbed areas--it was hard to walk through a patch of them without
stepping one a few--they were so thick--

(couple years ago went back to get some--that area is now all houses and no
Iris anywhere)
Now I have I.m growing in our club garden--the start came from the Bozeman
area--and the height is usually the same every year--but when we have a
wetter than usual spring--the color of the flower is darker-- so I think
that the individual clump can show a difference in color from year to
year--depending upon the amount of water on any given year--

Carryl zone 3/4 in western Montana--where several days of warm weather
produced danfordias in bloom and sore backs--and now it is snowing again--
