I moved my clumb of unguicularis this last fall, it seems it didn't mind
the move at all, and it's giving me a delightful group of blossoms right
now. I find this winter blooming iris quite charming... it's growing habit
for me has been similar to our Pacific Coast Iris.
Our club has maintained a public garden of various iris at the Sun House
Museum here in town. Some we have labeled, some have not been tracked.
We have put both bearded and beardless in the museum's garden.
At our club meeting in February, I notice an iris blooming in the
beardless section as I drove by. After the meeting, I had to go out to
check it out, because I wondered if it were I. unguicularis. Our past
climate had been a rather wet winter, and then quite a bit of lite freezing,
so I couldn't imagine anything else likely to be blooming. I concluded it
was I. unguicularis, although this clump no longer had a name stake. What
caught my attention though, was the sheer size of this clump! The size was
that of a rather health siberian clump! The folage was nearly two foot
high, possibly 18 inches in diameter, with several blooms popping out around
the outside. The blooms were low, and would have been diminished by the
folage, except there was no other garden plant blooming, so the eye did
catch these bloosoms. The clump had been planted in the middle of three
good size rocks, but nevertheless, it had established itself and was
overflowing the rocks. I don't remember when our club members planted this
thing, but I suspect I have had my plant as long, yet mine was no comparison
to the size of clump at the museum.
I don't get to see i. unguicularis in other people's gardens, obviously
because I don't go traveling to other gardens in the Winter. I'd be
interested in hearing what sort of growth habit others have experienced. Do
other's get these huge clumps?
