Wow, a Pacific Coast iris growing and flowering in Zone 4B! If this
plant really is I. douglasiana, that would be a record for cold
hardiness in this group. I know of someone in Maine growing I. tenax
(which is purportedly the most cold hardy species) but have heard of
no one further north growing them.
Ian, if you're able to collect a few seeds from this plant this
summer, I'd love to receive a few. I'm growing many PCI species and
hybrids and hope to combine the qualities of hardiness
and 'transplantability' with some of the wonderful colour
combinations coming out of California.
