It is curious that I. douglasiana is so adaptable comparted
to other Pacific Coast iris.. It is the "Coast Iris" because it
grows along the California coast. This is a climate moderated
by prevailing winds off the cold pacific ocean. Both summers
and winters tend to be cool and foggy, seldom experiencing
extremes in temperature. Perhaps the fact the it is subject
to damp fogs makes it adaptable to damper climates than
some of its relatives, but that doesn't explain temperature
tolerance.
