Re: Re: Edith, one more time

I am interested in all the reports of Edith Wolford and Beverly Sills failure to bloom in the cold areas. I live in an exceedingly hot, dry area here in Phoenix. My big problem with both of them was bloom out. They just bloom more heavily than they increase. I still have two small clumps of BS about which I keep my fingers crossed. When EW bloomed out in three different clumps in three different beds in the same season, it was goodbye Edith. With our irrigation, none of them ever suffered from lack of moisture.

I have a question: Who has grown Brazilian Holiday successfully? I have had it for three years and have yet to see a good blossom on it. I have two very weak clumps, one of which put up a tiny, sun cooked stalk last May.

I wonder if summer humidity doesn't have something to do with how EW performs. Stockton has very low summer humidity, which I do not imagine is the case in many areas where Edith does not grow well. In any case, one of the great potentials of iris regional hybridizing is to breed a variety that will grow in these areas and still have the great color of Edith Wolford.

This thread puts me in mind of the similar discussion of Feature Attraction which would seem from our postings to not grow anywhere and which in fact got a very high AM. Let's face it, both EW and FA do grow well enough in enough places to be getting their awards,
unless you want to think the judging system isn't working at all.
