Re: Re: Edith, one more time

Fred,
I have a fairly high summer humidity normally. It was sticky thie first year I stuck Ew in the ground. What were the problems with Feature Attraction? It was one of the first iris I ever ordered and has bloomed beautifully for me. I divided it and gave some to my sister-in-law for her birthday last year. I hope it does well. I have it under a Walnut tree where it gets light from one o'clock to dark and is a place where the heat gets depressive. One of my problem hot spots in the garden. I was going to move evrything out of that garden because the soil is beyond terrible. It is completey used up. Feature Attraction is one of the reasons I have held off tearing the garden up and trying to put some good back into the soil.

I wonder if summer humidity doesn't have something to do with how EW performs. Stockton has very low summer humidity, which I do not imagine is the case in many areas where Edith does not grow well. In any case, one of the great potentials of iris regional hybridizing is to breed a variety that will grow in these areas and still have the great color of Edith Wolford.

This thread puts me in mind of the similar discussion of Feature Attraction which would seem from our postings to not grow anywhere and which in fact got a very high AM. Let's face it, both EW and FA do grow well enough in enough places to be getting their awards,
unless you want to think the judging system isn't working at all.
