Hi Kelly,
www.worldiris.com is HIPS website (Historic Iris Preservation
Society), has great pictures of a number of iris.
Phil Edinger is the "master ID person" of HIPS -- usually
you can send pictures to him, via HIPS, to see if he can ID.
The web site has an "unknowns" section, where you can see a
picture of one that no one, including Phil Edinger, has been
able to ID so far.
Verbal descriptions aren't sufficient to ID old iris. You at
the least need to look at a picture, ideally comparing with
either a picture of the one you have, or a bloom of the one
you have.
Phil E. has a piece on the HIPS site on ID-ing old iris.
When I've gotten to where I have an idea, gee, this iris seems
to be pretty close to SO-AND-SO, I often order SO-AND-SO,
and compare it to the iris I have.
Superstition Iris gets their historic stock mostly from HIPS,
and has it checked on for accuracy, so they're a good source
for historics.
