Laetitia,

The process by which a Dykes Medalist is selected is analogous to the one
employed on the "Survivor" shows on TV, whereby the ultimate winner is
determined by a multiple stage elimination process. In the case of the
Dykes Medal, the selecting is done by the AIS Judges through the annual
ballots they cast for the various AIS awards.

Hundreds of irises of all types are introduced every year. Two or three
years after introduction (depending on the type of iris) the top 10% in
each type of iris as determined by the Judges ballots receive an HM
(Honorable Mention) Award. Two years later in a second round of voting the
top 10% of these HM winners in each type of iris receive the Award of Merit
(AM). Another couple of years and one iris of each type is awarded a Medal
specific to its type (the only exception is the Wister Medal for TBs, which
is awarded to three irises each year). All irises that receive such medals,
and only these irises, are eligible for the Dykes Medal the following year.
The major complication to this simple outline is that, in fact, each iris
has multiple rather than single year eligibility at each stage of the
process.

There are 49 irises eligible to be voted the Dykes Medal on this year's AIS
Ballot, which is every winner of the qualifying medals for the past three
years (1999, 2000, 2001), except for those that have already won the Dykes
Medal (STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN and YAQUINA BLUE). As a practical matter, the
vast majority of these candidates have as much chance of winning the Dykes
Medal as Harold Stassen ever had of being elected President of the United
States.
