A friend from Colorado sent me some seed of i. missouriensis a few years ago, which I planted and which yielded quite a few plants. Some of these I gave to members of my local (Siouxland Iris Society) club, but I still have 3 of them growing for myself. Wet springs, dry summers was the given description of the native habitat of this species, which apparently grows over a wide area of the western mountains. If I remember correctly (and it's been several years now, so I may be having another senior moment in saying this) the friend told me it was the state flower out in at least one Rocky Mtn. state. In any case, it seems to like northwest Iowa just as much as its native habitat.
