The only thing that I've found that works well on thistles is Spectracide
Weed & Grass killer -- it works very fast on both new and established plants.
I use a plastic tube to surround the target plant and protect everything
else around it. Don't bother with the regular weed killer version, though --
it'll make them droop a little, but it won't kill them in one application
like the other mixture does.
