(a quote from Barry Blyth about sharing seedlings)
Patricia, I particularly appreciate your sharing the quote from
Barry. He touches on a couple of things that are my own concerns. I
don't grow seedlings by the thousands like he and Keppel do, not that
I wouldn't like to. But it is the same problem even with just a few
hundred.
Advanced breeding work has often had the worst of the unattractive
characters sorted out of it. I find I am using breeders that have a
lot of Blyth ancestry. When I find I have saved half of the
offspring from a cross as reselects, I look down the road and
think, "Where amd I going to plant them all if I keep doing this?"
The compost pile is a terrible place to put a lush beauty just
because one of its siblings was selected instead.
I, too, would love to walk through his seedling patch.
